Problem Statement

Through this project we tried to understand the gaps and problems in the existing world of physio rehabilitation programs and aims to plug them by improving efficiency, motivation and also by reducing the overall cost for the patient, by focusing on bringing in design intervention outside the clinics, mostly within their own homes.

Project Context

This was my MDes final thesis project.

I collaborated with my dear friend Vineeth (The handsome guy to the left in the photo) on this. This project was a total roller coaster ride for both of us and we both were glad it came out well.

Research and Planning

We started off with research and Analysis. We had visited a pool of 10 orthopediatrician and close to 20 physiotherapists to do our Interviews. Through them we also got in touch with a few patients that we got to interact with to and understand their pain points.

Various research techniques and methodologies were carried out to get the data which was later analysed and synthesised to understand the patient and doctors journey and the problems they face.

Research & Planning

User Journeys

One of the key take aways came from interaction with the patients. To understand their pain points we formulated a User journey map.

From all the interviews and analysis we found out that lack of motivation, timely doctor intervention and non-compliance were the key issues to tackle.

Doctor Perspective

Time and again we cross referenced our findings and analysis to our trusted doctors and physiotherapists.

They all welcomed us intervention to their domain and gave us prompt and valuable insights.

Concept Mapping

The insights and pain point analysis from the research was later used to formulate a concept map which became our reference to our design interventions.

Care was given to make sure we include the family as a stakeholder in the process to expedite the recovery process.

Concept Makeup

Our solution was a Physiotherapy Kit, designed to tackle the problems in recovery for a patient that include motivation, assistance, access to doctor etc.

The Kit consists of 3 main components

  1. An Exo Skeleton

  2. An Exo Band

  3. An Exo App

Introducing Expro

Introducing Expro

The Exo lift which is an exo skeleton assists the person do his/her exercises in a coordinated fashion. It helps in Assistive, Resistive and Passive exercises in one single device and also enhances the movement necessary for daily activities.

The Exo band then collects the data from the user movements, which is later accessed by the patient, the doctor or the family to assess the recovery process.

The ExPRO App displays all the relevant info, current status, schedule as well as the treatment regime to the user. It can also act as a communication platform with the doctor/physio, who can get on-time-data from the activities the patient do.

Expro in action

The application keeps track of the recovery process for the patient and gives them timely reminders.

It also acts as a passive communication channel between the doctor and the patient.

Was it tough? Yes.
Was it fun? Hell yeah.
Will we do it again? Anytime.
